BLAIR ROBBINS: Master of Contemporary Watercolor and Mixed Media Sculpture
“What ties her works together is her fascination with time and change. The essence of her work involves the element of change, for change implies motion, and motion sparks a feeling of life.”

Blair Robbins is a highly innovative Santa Fe contemporary artist whose diverse media artwork captures the profound, rhythmic pulse of the natural world. Renowned for her brilliant contemporary watercolor paintings and her dynamic, mixed media wire sculptures, Robbins creates highly expressive artwork that explores the passage of time, the sculpting of the earth, and the raw vitality of the American West.

From Award-Winning Filmmaker to Fine Artist
Creating art has been a constant throughout Robbins’ life. Raised in a suburb of New York City, her early creative vision was shaped by the intense, artistic collage of the city and the serene, coastal beauty of her Connecticut town. However, it was her move westward that truly ignited her passion for the landscape.

Robbins spent years traveling the Western parklands extensively, observing the intricate details of local flora and fauna. This deep immersion led to a highly successful career as an independent filmmaker, creating nature and landscape films that earned her twenty-four awards in national and international film festivals. To Robbins, cinematography was poetry in motion. Looking through the camera lens heightened her senses to the vivid colors, patterns, and changing light of nature—an acute visual training that now profoundly influences her original studio art.

Expressive Watercolors and Mixed Media Innovation
Today, Robbins’ primary focus is contemporary watercolor painting, capturing the breathtaking Southwestern landscape and its native wildlife. Her creative process is brilliantly freeform and improvisational. Collectors of expressive watercolor art are drawn to her masterful use of spontaneous line work, combined with unconventional “no brush” and “dry brush” techniques, which give her canvases a fresh, breathing vitality.

Never one to be confined by a single medium, Robbins has also pioneered a thrilling new series of mixed media artwork: watercolor and wire sculpture. By manipulating wire to “hold a line and envelope space,” she creates three-dimensional, gestural forms that quite literally bring her subjects off the canvas and into the room.

The Spirit of the West and Osage Ancestry
While she paints a variety of subjects, Robbins holds a deep, unwavering passion for equine art. Her highly sought-after wild horse paintings depict the majestic animals free-running across vast, painted plains. These powerful pieces allude to the “Sky Dogs” of her Osage ancestry, honoring the deep spiritual connection between the horse and indigenous heritage.
