“I have always been inspired by the hard rarified light, the geometric landscape formations, and the vibrant colors of the American Southwest,” Jack says of his inspiration. “It just kept calling me back, I love painting it – it energizes my spirit.”

From West Point to the Easel
Dunn’s journey to becoming a full-time fine artist is as unique as his painting style. In 1976, he graduated with an engineering degree from the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point. It was during his subsequent service as a liaison officer to the Italian Army that he first discovered a profound interest in painting.

Following highly successful military and corporate careers that took him to more than 22 states and 3 countries, his deep-seated desire to create art never wavered. In 1989, he finally followed his dream, transitioning to the easel. He has now been painting full-time for over two decades, drawing deeply on his diverse global experiences and his engineering eye for structure and form.

“Controlled Abstraction” and Signature Style
Today, Dunn is a prominent figure in the Santa Fe fine art scene. Collectors of modernist landscape paintings are immediately drawn to his signature style, which he aptly refers to as “controlled abstraction.”

His vibrant canvases carry strong overtones of early 20th-century modernism and Fauvist style, seamlessly blending the historic influences of Marsden Hartley, Wassily Kandinsky, and Georgia O’Keeffe. By stripping the New Mexico landscape down to its essential geometric formations and saturating it with bold, unexpected colors, Dunn creates original desert artworks that are simultaneously structured and fiercely expressive.

A Highly Collected Legacy
Living in Santa Fe for over 22 years alongside his wife, successful sculptor Juanita Dunn, Jack is deeply embedded in the local arts community. For the past decade, he has held highly successful one-man shows and participated in the acclaimed “Tres Pintores” group exhibitions.

His profound impact on the regional art scene is well-documented. His painting “Heading to the Festival” was selected as the official 2015 Santa Fe Film Festival poster, and his work has been prominently featured in leading publications like Western Art Collector, Santa Fean, Western Art and Architecture, and Santa Fe magazine.

With over 400 pieces sold through Acosta Strong alone, Dunn’s original abstract paintings are highly sought after, residing in prestigious private collections across Europe and North America.
