A Lifetime Dedicated to Painting

Born in California in 1953, Harris showed artistic talent from an early age, exploring drawing, sculpture, music, and theater. A pivotal moment came in 1977, when he encountered John Rewald’s The History of Impressionism while working as a professional musician. Inspired by the Impressionists, he began experimenting with painting techniques that would guide the course of his career.

Over the decades, Harris expanded his practice through traditional realism, plein air painting, and contemporary approaches to abstraction. That openness to different styles remains one of the defining qualities of his work.

Featured in Western Art Collector: “Five Decades”

The October 2026 issue of Western Art Collector features Harris and this exhibition in “Five Decades,” by Michael Clawson. The editorial considers Harris’s nearly 50-year career and his ability to move among realism, impressionism, and modernist approaches.

The article also highlights works presented for the exhibition, including Rio Otono #4, Towhee and Terracotta, and Nocturne #5. Together, these paintings reflect a remarkable range of subjects and moods.

New Perspectives on Southwestern Light

For Harris, landscape is more than a record of place. In Morning Fog (The Robins) and The Ortiz and the Robin, shifting atmosphere, subtle natural detail, and expressive color evoke the distinct character of the Southwest. Each canvas offers a fresh perspective on the familiar beauty of New Mexico.

A Painter of Many Subjects

Harris’s artistic range extends beyond the sweeping vista. Mayan Fruit Vendor is a vibrant figurative portrait, while Galisteo Adobe turns an intimate architectural scene into a study of light and texture. Together, these works demonstrate the sensitivity and breadth of a painter who continues to follow new ideas.
